Glenn Donaire is making his comeback without the help of estranged World Champion brother Nonito.

When they began their pro boxing careers, older brother Glenn and Nonito Donaire were joined at the hip. They helped each other daily in the gym under the guidance of father Nonito Sr. But everything has changed since Jr. shocked the boxing world by knocking out Vic Darchinian with a perfect left hook in the 6th round several years back. That victory (which avenged a knockout suffered by Glenn to the "Raging Bull") gave the "Filipino Flash" instant stardom. That was the last fight that all of Team Donaire was together. Shortly after that monumental upset, Nonito became serious with future wife Rachel, and the inseparable boxing family broke apart. Nonito Jr. has captured world titles at 112 and 118 pounds, and now seeks the Super Bantam crown Feb 4th facing Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. in Texas. Glenn meanwhile made a successful comeback after a 3 year layoff stopping Alex Sanchez and fights again in March against Mexican Edgar Jimenez in Mexico City. At 18-4 and age 32, Glenn Donaire no longer works as a truck driver full time, so he can dedicate his entire attention to achieving what his younger brother has done twice.

He spent 4 months at "Club Fed" as Victor Conte refers to his 4 month minimum security stint for steroid distribution, and treated the jail sentence as a vacation. His fellow high profile inmates enjoyed a pampered existence with no jail cells, few restrictions, and recreation options galore. He also mentioned how easy it was to get drugs and sex while incarcerated, but that story is for another day. Saturday, Conte joined the rest of Team Donaire at Undisputed Gym in San Carlos for Nonito's public workout as he prepares for Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. Feb 4th. His team, with trainer Robert Garcia has moved back to Las Vegas with his first shot at 122 pounds less than 2 weeks away. Victor Conte is assisting with training methods, nutrition strategy and general expertise from his years of working with World Class athletes from Marion Jones to Barry Bonds. Of course back then he was dealing in illegal performance enhancing drugs..today, but all accounts he's "clean as a whistle" as he navigates his athletes toward getting the most out of their bodies within the rules. Conte also works with Andre Berto and Andre Ward, and once upon a time Sugar Shane Mosley who sued Conte for giving him steroids without his knowledge. Mosley later recanted, stating he did know what the "supplements" were, but avoided Federal prosecution, while Greg Andersen remained in prison refusing to give the Feds any info on Bonds and Conte. Sugar Shane provided some sweet info for the Government's case, that really has gone nowhere and cost taxpayers Millions of dollar to prosecute virtually nobody. But Saturday in San Carlos was Donaire's Day, as he held course for about 100 fans and media. If Floyd Mayweather Jr. does fight on May 5th, as his schedule has provided enabling him to stay out of jail for a while...the opponent will be Canelo Alvarez according to World Class trainer Robert Garcia. The Oxnard based former World Champion has taken on the challenging task of rebuilding the career of Kelly Pavlik despite his troubles, as he continues to guide Nonito Donaire toward the top of the pound for pound rankings. Garcia chimed in on Mayweather at Saturday's workout featuring Nonito in San Carlos. Convinced Pac-man v. Floyd will never happen, he also dismissed Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero as a potential opponent for Mayweather on Cinco de Mayo in Vegas. His reasoning...Floyds wants a less dangerous opponent, a foe who is not a southpaw, and ideally an inexperienced challenger like Saul Alvarez who at 21 has conquered all in his native Mexico, but has yet to have a defining win in the spotlight. Would Golden Boy risk it's top marquee Mexican warrior against the recognized pound for pound best at this stage of his career? Highly unlikely. Putting up another GB promoted fighter in Guerrero makes more sense, but Mayweather appears cold on fighting a dangerous lefty, preferring a bigger name on the downside of his career. Publicist Mario Serrano who touts "The Ghost" is every waking hour, thinks his fighter remains in the mix. The vast majority of the boxing community disagrees.

"The Filipino Flash" moves up in weight February 4th seeking another World Title, this one at Super-bantam-122. Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. (21-1 w/18KO's) and Donaire (27-1 w/18KO's) battle for the vacant WBO Championship in Texas. Vasquez is the naturally bigger guy, but thanks to former Balco steroid dispenser Victor Conte, Nonito has put on the extra pounds properly. Conte did his time in prison, albeit a "Club Fed" minimum security vacation as Victor explains it, but now consults with Donaire and other World Class athletes to get bigger and stronger without HGH. Saturday at Brian Schwartz' Undisputed Gym in San Carlos, Nonito put on a show for about 100 fans and media before heading back to Las Vegas for final preparations with trainer Robert Garcia.

Northern California Veterans Boxing Association want shows promoted in San Francisco.

Had lunch today with Eliza Olson and several dozen admitted boxing dinosaurs at the NCVBA function in San Francisco. Olsen carried cargo way north of her fighting weight, but pledges a comeback having won a World Boxing Championship a few years back. The other boxing lifers in attendance just want San Francisco to return to it's glory days. When Olson's Hall of Fame grandfather Bobo was World Champion between 1953-55, the Bay Area was second only to New York in promoted boxing shows and training venue. Now it seems to be a graveyard. Arturo Gastelum of Tango Productions put on a successful amateur show, and Golden Boy has Telefutura Spanish TV in town from time to time at Longshormen's Hall, but overall, the boxing scene has been moribond, pretty much since the passing of 50 year Hall of Fame San Francisco Chronicle boxing writer Jack Fiske' dismissal from the paper some 15 years ago. That's not to say Northern California is not producing talent. Oakland's Andre Ward, Nonito Donaire of San Leandro, and Gilroy's Robert Guerrero have won World Titles...Ana Julaton and Ava Knight are women's boxing stars from the Bay Area, Karim Mayfield of San Francisco remains undefeated, and Salinas' Eloy Perez fights for his first World Title against Adrian Broner in St. Louis next month. But there are only professional shows in this area when it serves bigger promoters like Golden Boy and Goossen-Tutor to give their local signed fighters a sniff at glory on their home turf. San Francisco is the home of ZERO unattached promoters who will give local pros a chance to compete, and revitalize boxing's soul in the City by the Bay.
Spider Joe Burke and Joey Amato are two of the NCVBA kingpins. They invited me to speak about my 15 years of promoting in Santa Cruz and Monterey, and several of the members tried convincing me to bring my formula to San Francisco. While their requests were much appreciated, since many of them attended SHAKEDOWN IN QUAKETOWN, and RIOT AT THE HYATT shows, I had to tell them "this ship has sailed"! I could have provided dozens of reasons why a local promoter doesn't stand a chance to make a profit in the current boxing world dominated by capitalized Big promoters, but decided to mention only the outrageous budget required to put on that caliber of show, how a former Executive Director of the California State Athletic Commission damaged each of my final 6 boxing shows (series ended in October 2007), how it's impossible to secure enough sponsorship without a TV contract, and of course the timing in my case of a depressed economy. Pay per view has become a white collar attraction for a blue colar sport. It serves Top Rank and Golden Boy who own Showtime and HBO contracts, but not the masses. Meaningful fights on free TV are a thing of the past, and of course the biggest fights involving boxers from these competing promotion companies are never made due to a feud between Bob Arum and Oscar De La Hoya, due to each promoters desire to control both main event fighters. These factors and others have eroded the core values of the Sweet Science, and those controlling the proceedings care more about their own power than the soul of our sport. The aged assembly of NCVBA remembered the glory days in San Francisco, highlighted by the first circular ring in the United States built in a San Francisco shipyard and demonstrated before workman in 1944 by former middleweight champ Fred Apostoli (who had 25 bouts in his hometown of San Francisco) and Vic Grupico. Ezzard Charles' heavyweight bouts sold out the Cow Palace in 1949 and 1951 with more than 15,000 fans. The Dick Tiger versus Gene Fullmer middleweight title match in 1962 at Candlestick Park had some 30,000 fans. Newman's Gym was the epicenter of northern California boxing for over 60 years in what is now known as San Francisco's Tenderloin District, and was a preferred training facility for Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay during the 1960 Olympic Trials held in San Francisco), and George Foreman after his return from the 1968 Olympics.
Recalling memories from 15 years of sold out boxing shows in Monterey and Santa Cruz fired up the members who miss the good old days. It's too bad I had to inject a dose of reality into the presentation, and decline their pleas for me to promote again, this time in San Francisco.

Landing leads, setting the tempo, and basically schooling the Brit as he has all Super Six Tournament opponents Kessler, Green and Abraham. Now 25-0 as a pro, the last American Boxing Olympic Gold Medalist, Andre Ward becomes the undisputed Super Middleweight Champion of the World. While Andre's football counterpart Tim Tebow has revolutionized prayer but may return to earth this Sunday on the gridiron, Ward's road to national fame comes from the same devine inspiration. About 1000 boxing fans enjoyed 15 amateur fights at Longshormen's Hall Friday night. A couple current and former pro World Champions were also on hand, including, the IBF Women's Flyweight champ, 3-time King Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero and other bay area boxing luminaries. The action within the squared circle took center stage, with dancing girls and pulsating music part of the show. The event was an effort to revive interest in Bay Area boxing, and by all accounts it was a rousing success. Boxers from the age of 10 put on quite a display. All 15 bouts were well matched and contentious. Francisco Madrigal of Bad to the Bones in Modesto scored the most sensational knockout of the night, but most fights were close and went to a decision. In his final fight as an amateur, Ricardo Pinell, trained by Eddie Croft at B Street gym in San Mateo ended the night with a decision over Keynoe Fenner from Baby Face gym in Pacifica. 17 different boxing clubs were represented, and several fighters fought unattached. Promoter Arturo Gastelum promises future amateur and pro shows will become a fixture in San Francisco's future.

Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero is tired of waiting. He's willing and ready for all comers first fight back from shoulder surgery

Injuries and family challenges have created a rocky road toward the top of the boxing world for Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero. Despite the latest setback his plan remains to take on all comers. Most fighters would take a tune up fight following shoulder surgery. Not Robert. His opportunity against Marcos Maidana a name opponent in front of a Worldwide audience was derailed by a thrown jab in training the week prior to his homecoming in San Jose at HP Pavilion. The rotator cuff tear required surgery, and Guerrero remains on the shelf, with January 1st his approved date for hitting the heavy bag and resuming serious training. Following victories over Joel Casamayor, and Michael Katsitis...Robert was finally on the fast track, but stalled again by the operation. Dealing with wife Casey's leukemia since his son's birth 5 years ago placed his career on hold from time to time but Guerrero stayed true to his faith and family, and took time off during bone marrow treatments, to deal with the deadly disease. Casey Guerrero has been Cancer free for over a year thanks to a successful transplant and Robert staying by her side. That devotion has elevated Guerrero's confidence, and consequently performance in the ring. He's been able to train away from his home in Gilroy now that Casey is now OK. Complicating his rise to the top was a sticky dispute with former promoter Goossen-Tutor. Robert won his release and joined Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions. Guerrero wants Mayweather, Pac-man, Amir Kahn and any top welterweight, and seems to be willing to jump right over the 140 pound Jr. Welter class for a shot at the big boys. That is a noble and confident position to take...but is it a wise one? Perhaps waiting a little longer might be a good thing, but Guerrero's patience is wearing thin.

Traveling into hostil territory last month, Ava Knight did the only thing she possibly could to win..knock the Mexican Champion out. "The Lady of Boxing" closed the show at :34 seconds of the 2nd round. Arely Mucino (14-1, Monterey Mexico) was the overwhelming favorite fighting at home for her own promoter. No matter. Knight knocked Mucino to the canvas to begin the 2nd round with a straight left and right to chin, but the Mexican referee ruled it a slip. Again, no matter. Ava simply threw a digging shot to the body and one to the head for the knockout win and the IBF Championship at 112 pounds. Owning a 7-1-3 record, Knight is ready for any and all challenges. Finding shows where promoters will feature female fighters is Ava and Ben's biggest challenge, but if Mexico, Canada or Europe come a calling...expect Ava Knight to answer the bell.

This iconic gym is a classic...established by Charles King after the 1989 earthquake following a move from another Oakland location. Kings Gym was a constant call for me during 15 years of promoting in Santa Cruz and Monterey. Proprietor Charles King always helped me find fighters for the shows. The Las Vegas 38 year old fitness trainer took the fight on 3 days notice but Sharon Gaines pressed the action for all 6 rounds. Carina Moreno, a 2 time World Champion showed her pedigree winning a unanimous decision. The match was a late addition to a Golden Boy/Don Chargin Promotions card featuring Eloy Perez in his adopted home of Salinas on Telefutura. Perez stopped Ira Terry in 6, moving to 23-0 and retaining his NABO 130 pound title belt. The women fought at flyweight, 112 pounds and delighted the crowd at Sherwood Hall. There were no knockdowns and neither fighter landed any telling blows, but the action was consistent and relentless.

"The Prince" moved to 23-0 with a sudden referee stoppage of game Ira Terry who falls to 24-7. There was considerable action as Terry from Memphis connected shots on the local favorite throughout the bout, but Eloy Perez was in control. Staying unbeaten with his 2nd straight KO in Salinas, televised on Telefutura and promoter by Don Chargin and Golden Boy. Perez retains his NABO Super Featherweight champion getting in some rounds after his last fight that last 4 minutes...a blast out of Daniel Jimenez. Sharon Gaines of Las Vegas stepped to the plate and accepted a last minute offer to fight former 2-time World Champion Carina Moreno in Salinas Friday. Gaines at 12-11 was in shape and declared her intentions to take the bout at 112 pounds 3 weeks ago...but Golden Boy Promotions didn't seal the deal until Wednesday, the day before weigh-in. So Moreno of nearby Watsonville, after a series of fall out matches, has Gaines to thank for making the trip on very short notice to get some of the rust off. It will not be easy for the former 105 and 108 world champ, as Gaines throws punches in bunches, is tireless and fights at her natural flyweight division. My apologies for the lack of light and background noise on the video. Sharon Gaines arrived late to the weigh-in having accepted a last minute offer to fight Carina Moreno in Salinas. The Las Vegas fitness trainer and pro boxer made the 112 contract weight easily which is her weight class whereas Moreno who held titles at 105 and 108 pounds. Sharon Gaines is why women's boxing is enjoyed by many of us.
The Main event "Encore" show headliner Eloy Perez faces Ira Terry his foe from Tennessee allowing. The Memphis Jr. Lightweight is 24-6 but a knockout victum in his past 4 fights. Those opponents however were undefeated as is 22-0 Perez.
Telefutura goes on the air at 11:30 Pacific on the tape delay, while gates open at 6 locally at Sherwood Hall, next to the Salinas Sports complex on Main St. If the main event is over early, the women's matchup swing bout has a shot to make the broadcast.
This Don Chargin-Golden Boy event is the 2nd straight in Salinas, where Perez is "Prince" backed by Team Garcia who does the heavy lifting of selling tickets and keeping the local boxing scene alive. Legendary Promoter Don Chargin gets to sit back and enjoy the fruits of 60 years of labor in the boxing world. The longtime major promoters like Golden Boy and Top Rank occasionally throw a bone to female fighters as is the case Friday night in Salinas, but they have yet to discover the value of including a women's bout consistently on their cards, hire a matchmaker for female bouts and allow true fighters like Sharon Gaines the chance to participate as a pro in the sport they love.

Finding last minute opponents for pro boxing bouts is risky business. Fighters who accept a bout with little notice, generally take it for the purse. Sharon Gaines of Las Vegas is not one of those fighters. She has been a candidate many times on shows in Monterey Ca. to challenge former Straw and Jr. Flyweight World Champion Carina Moreno, but for any number of reasons that showdown never took place. It will on Friday in Salinas at Sherwood Hall. Eloy "Prince" Perez has a "stay busy" Main Event bout on Telefutura against Ira Terry, a knockout victim in his past 4 bouts. Sharon Gaines stepped to the plate yesterday, given 4 days notice. Not a great formula for success, but the Vegas fighters at 11-12 as a pro is always in shape and a "live" opponent at 112 pounds. Carina "La Reina" Moreno from nearby Watsonville is the house fighter with a 21-3 mark, but her better days seem to be behind her, plagued by inactivity in recent years. The entire Golden Boy Promotion was created less than a month ago. A couple weeks ago it was announced Moreno would fight, but not before an APB was sent into the boxing world from publicist Mario Serrano, did an approvable foe for the former World Champion step up. Other potential opponents like Jolene Blackshear of San Diego and Melissa McMorrow from San Mateo turned down the fight, having other plans and not enough time to prepare. Born in the South Pacific, these fighters have found the promised land in California. Pacman and Donaire occupy spots 1 & 3 on the pound for pound list and are clients of Top Rank. Mercito Gesta fights for Golden Boy and at 22-0 is knocking on the door for a big fight at 122..and then there's Bruno Escalante. Like Gesta, Escalante left Cebu in the Philippines for a career in the United States, but does not have the cache to sign with one of the main promotional companies as has his fellow countrymen. All 4 Filipino fighters are southpaws...each started their careers at lower weight classes, and have at one time or another trained at Undisputed Gym in San Carlos, Ca. or Wildcard in Hollywood. Escalante, coming off a 53 second KO over Frank Gutierrez a couple weeks ago in Salinas is 4-0, but his fights have been few and far between. That's now about to change. Bruno recently signed a contract with Zeferino Boxing, promising him 10 fights over the next 3 years. The new ambitious promoters are based in Texas, so expect many of Escalante's upcoming bouts in the Lone Star State.

Adrian Broner is 21-0 with 17 KO's and a Golden Boy client. An HBO date of November 26th in his hometown of Cincinnati is scheduled. GBP offered $325,000 to Scotland's Ricky Burns to travel into hostile territory, but he declined...instead moving from 130 to 135 for a fight in November at home vs. Michael Katsitas. Eloy Perez of Salinas is the logical replacement, having destroyed Daniel Jimenez in two rounds a couple weeks ago, advancing to 22-0 with just 6 KO's. GBP head honcho Richard Schaefer has the fight budgeted but hasn't decided on an opponent for Broner. When the idea was originally floated by Perez' representatives Team Garcia of Salinas, manager Kathy Garcia's daughter Melissa was scheduled to be married that weekend. The family is now prepared to scrub the nuptials, but the offer has yet to arrive however. Perez would accept less purse than offered to Burns for the bout on HBO...knowing everything would be slanted against him. The knock on Eloy Perez was he doesn't knock anybody out, fights in "protect" mode rather than attack, and is a great boxer who wins without engaging in a fight. Friday night in Salinas, he proved all the critics wrong. Daniel Jimenez (21-4, Puerto Rico) was the NABO Champion's victim, leaving no doubt he belongs with the elite in the Jr. Lightweight division. Perez (22-0 w/6KO's) was spectacular in knocking down Jimenez 3 times during the fight that lasted 4 minutes. The humble Eloy, praised his team of manager Kathy Garcia, her trainer husband Max, son Sam and the late great Don Familton's son Dean for a tremendous training camp that included a month of sparring with Mike Dallas...and legendary promoter Don Chargin who brought the show to Salinas, 60 years after his first promotion in Santa Clara. Team Garcia manages headliner Eloy Perez (21-0) and has been the driving force for all things Salinas in the boxing world. Telefutura will televise the Perez vs. Daniel Jimenez (21-3 San Juan Puerto Rico) NABO Title bout from the Salinas Sports complex with a few other local area fighters on the 6 bout card. A crowd of local fans and media jammed into Chapala's Restaurant for Thursday's weigh-in, where the scale was placed on the floor for some reason rather than stage, without a microphone to announce weights and names of the fighters they came to see. No bout sheets were available to the legit press on hand, so confusion reigned supreme. Regardless, a good time was had by all as part of the festivities was a celebration of Don Chargin's Hall of Fame career as a promoter, that started 60 years ago at Washington Park in Santa Clara...also an outdoor venue. Mr. Chargin lost his wife and promoting partner Lorraine a few years back, but still does an occasional show of his own while serving as a consultant for Golden Boy Promotions. This will be Perez' 5th consecutive Telefutura appearance, so the NABO Jr. Lightweight Champion is building his reputation to that Spanish viewing audience. He is not however known well enough to warrant the big fights he seeks, and his promoter Golden Boy has other fighters in the 130 weight class they prefer to feature over Eloy. Jimenez has fought once in the past 2 years and that bout was at Jr. Lightweight (142). Daniel did make the 130 contract weight yesterday on his third try on the scale. The knock on Perez has been his passive nature in the ring. He fights well enough to win, but not in exciting fashion. Trained by Max Garcia and Dean Familton, Eloy's defensive cautious style is a product of the late great Don Familton's (Dean's dad) teachings, which helped Perez gain victories but very few knockouts (5) as he has consistently refused to engage his opponent and take chances. The 4-time World Champion and "queen" of local female pro fighters will collide with 8-2 Chantel Cordova on August 27th at HP Pavilion. The venue known as The Tank, abandoned it's boxing series a few years back, but thanks to Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero from nearly Gilroy, the home of the Sharks gets back in the boxing business, as Golden Boy Promotions brings HBO to town. Convincing the promoter to include a women's bout on the card, was no easy sell, but thanks to a request from Guerrero, Carina Moreno gets back in squared circle close to home. Moreno, at 21-3, and former World Jr. Flyweight champion faces a much less experienced opponent in Cordova, but with a possible mid-Sept. bout in Las Vegas, this is the tune up bout Carina needs to remove some of her ring rust. Female fights in the United States are decreasing, and many top flight pro women boxers are seeking bouts and even promoters in Mexico, Europe and Canada. The plight of female boxing may have been difference had the IOC included it in previous Olympic Games. Certainly Moreno's fame and opportunities would be greater had women's boxing been included before she turned pro. Female Olympic competition at the London Games is included for 2012, but only in 3 weight classes. There is hope that exposure will aid female fighters in the future, but it's doubtful to have an impact in the United States.

Golden Boy Promotions is not in the business of promoting women's boxing and does not employ a matchmaker for female bouts...but since Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero is fighting Marcos Maidana close to home at the HP Pavilion on August 27th, another local fighter has been added. The first announced undercard bout will feature 4 time World Champion Carina Moreno of in a 6 rounder against Chantel Cordova at 110 pounds. Moreno of Watsonville is 21-3 compared to 8-2 Cordova, but since female boxing matches are an endangered entity in the U.S., even a 4 time World Champ is willing to fight for peanuts in a 6 rounder just to get a bout, having been frozen out for over a year. GB matchmaker Eric Gomez spoke about the desire to involve local fighters on the HBO telecast August 27th, and when questioned about including a women's bout on the show at the recent press conference, he confirmed a local women's bout was being considered. It's somewhat curious however (as stated in video) that Gomez assured me that he and assistant matchmaker Robert Diaz would handle any contracts involving a women's bout on the San Jose card. As it turns out, neither Golden Boy matchmaker appears to have had a "hands on" effort, instead turning over that task to Claudia Ollis, who is not a Golden Boy matchmaker. Ms. Ollis has been hovering around women's boxing in California, and recently was involved in representing Kaliesha West who fought Ava Knight to a draw in Los Angeles on a Golden Boy show. West did not have a contract with Golden Boy, and she has since hooked up with promoter Hector Garcia in Mexico and has a bout on Televisa on August 20th. Ollis was not employed by Golden Boy for that match, nor was she Kaliesha's manager as represented, so it seems Golden Boy is pawning off women's boxing responsibilities to someone who can insulate them from actually making a commitment. Until Golden Boy or any other promoter in America makes a legitimate effort to make meaningful female fights and actually hire someone to take on the task, the landscape for women's boxing in this country will remain stymied, with only occasional bouts to appease an audience that promoters seem to care little about...even though it would be in their best interest to do so.

I spoke with Eric at the Robert Guerrero-Marcos Maidana press conference in San Jose to announce the August 27th promotion on HBO...inquiring if "The Ghost" could possibly be a candidate for Manny Pacquiao should he defeat Maidana. Gomez did not give any indication that such a matchup was possible. It's been years since any Top Rank attraction has battled a Golden Boy client in a significant match. Certainly Sugar Shane Mosley got his payday with Pacquiao, but the Hall of Famer had to bolt from Oscar's group and align with Bob Arum to make that forgettable fight happen. Gomez also mentioned Juan Manuel Marquez, but he too has severed ties with Golden Boy. It's becoming routine for Eloy Perez. Telefutura, Oscar de la Hoya's Solo Boxeo series has broadcast the Salinas prospect several times...last night as it's main event, but as has been the case in recent bouts the other guy has not put up much of a fight. Of course Golden Boy Promotions isn't about to put somebody dangerous in front of their Jr. Lightweight client, but someone willing to mix it up would certainly help Eloy in his quest for stardom. Successfully defending his WBO title proved very little in the excitement category, as Perez' KO total stays stuck at 5, despite being 21-0. Eloy needs his foe to be agressive so he can counter...Rodriguez did not offer many chances, staying in "survival mode" as trainer Max Garcia saw it. Last nights action for the Salinas fighter again took place in San Francisco at Longshorman's Hall. Spanish TV carried the delayed version at 11:30pm. Team Garcia, Eloy's management and training team seems content to have their fighter help Golden Boy Promotions satisfy it's Telefutura TV contract and keep the Tecate money flowing from sponsorship, but hopefully someday the anglo audience will see the talents of Eloy Perez on TV. As for the question of being exciting enough for crossover appeal, it's up to Oscar and his legendary boxing promoter Don Chargin to match Perez with an opponent who wants to do more than just survive.

"Speedy" was a rather stationary target for "The Prince" Perez Friday night at Longshorman's Hall, but the sensational Jr. Lightweight from Salinas had to settle for an 8 round 80-72 across the board decision. Rather than go for the kill, Eloy Perez stuck to his team's game plan to box and control the action. Gonzalez, now 27-4 was coming off a nearly 2 year layoff, and came in 3 pounds heavy despite being a natural bantamweight for most of his career. The show was telecast on Telefutura, but had several major glitches. The State required ambulance arrived late, but neither EMT was a paramedic, so all 3 preliminary fights took place after the Co-main events were fought for television. Another glaring error of the promotion was the omission of Eloy Perez on the fight poster. Legendary promoter Don Chargin, who has been putting on pro boxing cards for 60 years, took the mishaps in stride, but had to be secretly fuming that his assistants had failed to give Perez his proper due (especially since Eloy is Don's Golden Boy Promotions client) and failed to follow California guidelines requiring a paramedic and ambulance to be on scene for the show to start. The other Main Event featured Filipino Mercito Gesta who destroyed Genaro Trazancos, stopping him after 3 rounds. Roger "Speedy" Gonzalez has a nice resume. 19-0 Eloy Perez, the sensational Jr. Lightweight from Salinas knows he must humble the veteran. The WBA World Championship was on the line, Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward defended his belt at home, with the bout telecast on Showtime... but a paltry crowd of 4100 at the cavernous Oracle Arena witnessed a terrible main event. Promoter Dan Goossen didn't like the fight when he made the match, and his fears were realized even though his prize client Andre Ward pitched a near shutout over the awkward, clutching, grabbing, elbowing Sakio Bika. Granted, Goossen-Tutor Promotions had limited time to satisfy Ward's desire to fight after original foe Andre Dirrell bailed due to a neurological issue, but the action was virtually non-existent as both boxers stayed inside and clutched continuously throughout the bout. Oakland's Olympic champion and undefeated (23-0) native son, pitched a near shutout on all the judges scorecards...but the bout was not pleasing to the eye, which has been the case for most Andre Ward fights since turning pro following Olympic Gold. Andre's next challenge will be a Super Six battle with Arthur Abraham, who was dominated by Carl Froch in Finland last night. That matchup will not be in Oakland, but is scheduled for early spring in the World Boxing Classic...a tournament concept that has taken it's lumps with defections, injuries and other challenges. It was no contest from the opening bell. Andre Ward dominated Allan Green with superb tactics. The former Olympic Gold medalist defended his World Super Middleweight title by forcing Green to back up against the ropes and sustain punishment for all 12 rounds. The result was a complete shutout on all judges scorecards. The fight was totally one-sided and lacked any sustained action with constant infighting and clinching. Andre Ward dominated every aspect of the Super-Six showdown at Oakland's Oracle Arena to the joy of his hometown crowd, but the viewing audience on Showtime had to be disappointed. Nearly 9000 fans supported the hometown hero, as Green had no counter to Andre's attack. Suffering his 2nd pro loss, Green did not look like he belonged in the same ring as Ward despite his 29 wins. Now 22-0, Andre moves on in the 168 pound tournament to face his former Olympic teammate Andre Dirrell. with boxing skills that don't provide excitement, just victories. Now 41-0, he added Mosley as his most marquee name conquest in a lopsided decision. Floyd had Shane uncomfortable throughout. Only one significant punch landed for Mosley in round 2, While loading up the rest of the night in vein. Mayweather pilled up the rounds in a boxing masterpiece for purists but lackluster for the average fan. In typical winning Floyd fashion, the bout lacked action. 15,000 fans at the MGM Grand Garden witnessed ownership of Mosley through superior movement, defense, and execution of a plan that seemed lacking from Sugar Shane's corner. Only one fighter made the adjustments. Promoter Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya christened Floyd as the best on the planet, and who can argue? If Manny Pacquaio agrees to blood testing since Floyd now calls the shots, that postponed match can be made. Mayweather believes Pacman is using the testing process to duck that fight. Don't count on Floyd pursuing that fight. He will be romanced to take any fight out there and that's just the way he wants it. It was a rather subdued mood following Eloy Perez' victory over Gilberto Sanchez Leon in retaining his NABO Jr. Lightweight title. Co-trainers Dean Familton and Max Garcia were happy with the majority decision win, but not with the way Perez fought. Many fundamental errors were made and Dean's dad, the late great Don Familton who was the coach's coach would not have been pleased. Still, a win is a win even if not impressive. 95-95, 97-93 and 96-96 were the judges scores against a tough but limited extremely tall boxer from Mexicali. In moving to 17-0, Perez may not have improved his stock with this performance, but still has his sights on a World Championship bout in the near future. Correcting fundamental flaws however must come first.

It was not artistic, efficient or dominating, but Eloy Perez of Salinas improved to 17-0 with a majority decision over Gilberto Sanchez Leon of Mexicali. Giving up 6 inches in height and 8 inches in reach, "Prince" Perez was off his game tonight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but did enough to prevail. Early on the Leon left jab controlled the action and Eloy had no answer. As the bout progressed, the reigning NABO Jr. Lightweight champion from Salinas began to get inside, land more punches and move the tall Mexican backward. Neither fighter was hurt in the bout, but Perez was more efficient late as Leon's output diminished. Eloy Perez and his Garcia training and management team in Salinas still believe he's on track for a World Title shot, but his foe this evening was not championship material
and Perez was lucky Leon wasn't the caliber of boxer he'll need to fight in the future. So it's back to the drawing board for Perez despite the victory. We'll hear from Eloy's trainers in our upcoming video blog.

The Gilroy champion's wife Casey has been battling Cancer from about the time their 3 year-old son Robert Jr. was born. Her fight is never ending. Bone marrow transplants have not raised hope. Casey Guerrero's condition has not improved, and "The Ghost" has quit the sport he loves to be with the one he loves most. The pair were teenage sweethearts and their bond transcends all. With chemotherapy sessions and children at home, Robert steps aside to let others compete for his World Championship. Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions will revive Guerrero's career when the time is right. In the meantime, the local champ has a more critical agenda. Improving to 15-0, Eloy Perez the prodigy of Team Garcia in Salinas completely dominated Juan Santiago (11-3, Denver) to capture the North American Boxing Organization Super Featherweight Championship last night in San Jose. The inspired performance at HP Pavilion was dedicated to his late great mentor Don Familton who recently passed away. Eloy had Don's son Dean and as always Max Garcia in his corner, as Perez followed instructions to a T, and frustrated the taller Santiago throughout. The end came due ton accumulation of left jabs that closed the right eye of the game Colorado fighter at the end of round 6. Eloy Perez is still only 23 and will continue to soak in the wisdom and guidance of his team...and will take a huge step as he steps up to fight his toughest opponent to date on the "Sugar" Shane Mosley vs. Andre Berto card in Las Vegas on January 30th.

I had the honor last night in San Francisco to introduce the trainer and manager of the year at the Northern California Veteran Boxers' Association awards dinner. Saturday was the couple's 29th wedding anniversary as well. The family has done more for boxing in Salinas than anyone, and the NCVBA's board acknowledged their years of service. The Garcia's worked with amateurs over a decade ago, and some became pros. Jose Celaya was their prize boxer and was carefully matched to become the #1 rated welterweight contender. Jesus "Chuy" Rodriguez moved into the World's top 50 under Max's tutaledge and Kathy's management. And now, the most equipted fighter to come out of Team Garcia, Eloy Perez will try to improve his record to 15-0 Friday, December 4th in San Jose at the Tank. The bout is for the NABO Super Featherweight Title.
Every fighter fortunate enough to be part Team Garcia, also becomes part of the family. The late great Don Familton who schooled Max to become a world class trainer was a part of the team. So is nutricianist Linda Rodriguez. " Sugar " Shane Mosley and his father Jack are the connection at Big Bear...and they all participate in Team Garcia, knowing how Max and Kathy do everything possible for fighters and only expect effort in return. Eloy is Team Garcia's only pro these days and is getting total attention from his Team. He once was headed for stardom. Ranked #1 and in position for a Title shot. Trained with Shane and Jack Mosley at Big Bear, managed by Jackie Kallen and later by Team Garcia who managed his career and made him part of their family in Salinas. All was on track. He was fighting and winning Main Events at the RIOT AT THE HYATT in Monterey. And then it all exploded. Celaya left Kathy and Max Garcia for the lure of promises and signing money. He bolted to become the Marquez Brothers' property. Wanna be promoters, Marquez Brothers produced a pair of shows featuring Jose in San Jose, where he was knocked out on both televised bouts. Celaya's new promoter knew nothing about the business of boxing and was clueless in all aspects of being involved in the sport. They cut Jose lose a couple years ago, and Celaya's downward spiral has continued, while his weight increases. He no longer has a promoter, trainer or manager. He appeared at the weighin Friday in Oakland alone. His proper fighting weight was welter-147 when he fought in Monterey and across the country. He tipped the scales at 166 for his dismal performance against Tony Hirsch. Celaya owns a 31-6 record and intends to continue his career...what else can he do? His feet and hands were slow during his 4 round loss to Hirsch and it can only get worse from here. The interview above was an attempt to see if Jose Celaya has any remorse for leaving Team Garcia, or regrets about destroying his career by doing so. It's a topic that changed his life, but one he avoids thinking about.

Mikkel Kessler at 40-1 is favored by most against undefeated Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward, in the American's home town of Oakland. The Hayward High grad hasn't been beaten in 10 years, but remains questioned about primarily his strength against the perceived stronger and experienced Kessler. Home ring, California referee and 2 of 3 judges are assigned by the Golden State which hasn't pleased the WBA champ of late...but he had to know early on who the officials were. Reporting from Las Vegas - Rabbinical student Yuri Foreman became the first Israeli fighter to win a world boxing championship when he scored a shocking and one-sided decision over Puerto Rican Daniel Santos in a WBA super-welterweight title fight Saturday night on the Miguel Cotto-Manny Pacquiao undercard at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Foreman (28-0, 8 knockouts) knocked Santos (32-4-1, 23 KOs) down in the second round, had him pinned against the ropes in the third then appeared to hurt the champion with a flurry of punches near the end of the fourth round.

Santos made a final desperate charge in the 12th and final round, knowing he needed a knockout to win. But he was far too weary by then, stumbling to the canvas again with less than a minute left in the fight.

Foreman was one of five fighters who took unblemished records into the undercard and came out with victories.

Andre Ward is ready for the biggest challenge of his perfect Olympic and Professional boxing career

Andre Ward is counting down the days. The press conference is Wednesday, Friday's weighin is but 4 days away, and fight night at Oracle in Oakland now 5. The Olympic Gold medalist has been antsy for a couple weeks now, and plans to unleash the full measure of his fury against Mikkel Kessler in the final first round match of the Super 6 supermiddleweight tournament. Already in the winner's circle are Arthur Abraham and Carl Frock, and despite fighting at home, Ward is posted as the underdog by boxing progrosticators. He wasn't supposed to win Olympic Gold in Greece when he fought in a heavier weight class. He hasn't lost in nearly ten years since his early amateur days. He and trainer/G-D father Virgil Hunter have a certain mojo that is undefinable. Andre insists Virgil is a world class trainer. So called "experts" have disagreed for years, yet Ward keeps on winning. Their connection extends beyond the squared circle. Kessler as well puts his faith in his "second dad" and head trainer Richard Olsen who has coached Mikkel since age 13. Hunter had Andre in the gym at 6 years old.

11 days and counting. Undefeated Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward's title challenge of Kessler in the Super Six Series on Showtime Nov. 21st, promises to be the fight of his life. It will have to be against the favored Danish champion. Two of the 3 round robin bouts have left Ward as the only remaining American. He captured Gold in Greece, and now looks for his US double destiny as a pro. Andre knows it's his time to shine at a probable packed Oakland Oracle Arena, but Kessler has his own plans. The pair are perhaps the most intelligent, noble, and honorable boxers to ever compete for a World Title. "Why bullshit outside the ring" says Kessler in answer to absence of trash talk between the two. Both have the heart of a champion and respect eachother's "heart of a champion". The character of both fighters add to the intrigue of this matchup. Each fighter has a father figure as
trainer, who took them into the gym at an early age. Andre started at age 9 with Virgil Hunter in his corner throughout the Olympic Gold medal run. Giving details of new management, upcoming scheduled fights, and other nuggets of optimism, Carina "La Reina" Moreno spoke to a gathering of fans this summer in Santa Cruz about the great things in store for the 21-1, four time World Boxing Champion from Watsonville. It didn't happen. A scheduled TV fight in LA for August fell through, and the best Carina's advisors could pull off is a fight this Saturday in Mexico against a local girl with a 3-1 record. Pathetically, this bout has been sanctioned by the WBC as a Title Defense for Moreno. Carina needs a fight, having not been in action since February, but what a sad commentary that perhaps women's boxing pound for pound best must travel to Mexico and battle a severly unqualified opponent. The 105 pound Champion left training camp in Tahoe last week and has been in Mexico getting acclimated for Saturday's World Championship bout. Anibel Ortiz is from Toluca, Mexico so even though she has nowhere near the credentials of Moreno...Carina may be forced to knock Ortiz out to escape with a victory. Knocking out foes is not Carina's strength. She systematically breaks down her opponents to win lopsided decisions...in America. Mexican referees are notorious for protecting their own on home soil. Judges are swayed by the predominant support Ortiz will enjoy. There no doubt will be a post fight story or two of how the Mexican promoters made Carina's pre-fight moments miserable. Thing is, even though Moreno hasn't fought as a pro in a foreign country, she has much international experience as an amateur, and recalls all too well how she was tormented in Turkey while fighting for USA boxing. Despite Carina's far superior skills and resume, the hometown Latina will have a fighting chance thanks to the various elements of local bias.

When Ana Julaton upset multi-time World Champion Kelsey Jeffries in San Jose last month, the beauty of Filipino decent reached the promised land in the 122 pound weight class. Pictured with Carina Moreno, who owns the 105 and 108 pound World titles, the pair of female champs seem to be on different paths as they prepare to defend their titles. Julaton, of Daly City, will return to the venue of her greatest triumph for her first bout as Champion on December 4th at the HP Pavilian, while Moreno, who has been "La Reina" of the lower weight classes for years must go to Mexico and fight on Halloween night against an unqualified opponent just to get a fight. Carina has been out of action for nearly a year, unable to find a bonefide challenger. Without a promoter and management team that can find her fights that she deserves against legit opponents, Moreno is forced to grasp at whatever comes her way in order to stay busy. It's a total travesty that the WBC sanctions this bout against Anabel Ortiz for the Minimumweight World Title. Ortiz is from Mexico and will have the home ring advantage, but what a joke! Her record is 3-1 and she lost her last fight. No promoter in this country cares to find a suitable match for Moreno, who is 21-1. Carina needs a fight and will bite the bullet just to get in action again, but what a sad commentary that no legitimate opponent will step up with a promoter who will make the match. There are far more qualified opponents than Ortiz that Moreno could fight, but they are in Asia or Europe and despite being a 4-time champ, Carina is at the mercy of the sport. It's risky business traveling to a foreign land when you are not a KO artist. Winning a decision is virtually impossible. Foreign promoters always seem to stack the deck, not only with biased judges but with the treatment of the women who take to the road. Tricks range from bogus appearances, to intentional noise and distractions wherever the fighter and her team is staying. Food is always an issue, and hanky panky at the weigh-in is commonplace. Carina shouldn't have any problem with a female owning a 3-1 record even in her Mexican hometown, but what a statement the WBC is making for sanctioning such a matchup.

The best pro boxing show ever presented at the HP Pavilion was produced last night in San Jose. Look for some 4 round action elsewhere on this video blog, but the show belonged to the women who went 10 spirited rounds. Kelsey "The Road Warrior" Jeffries used all her experience to make the fight into a street fight, but underdog Ana Julaton landed more punches and would not be intimidated by the tactics executed by the veteran of 51 pro bouts with 7 world titles on her resume. At 4-1-1 the Daly City, 122 pound IBA champion Ana Julaton pulled the upset. She had Nonito Donaire Sr. in her corner, while Kelsey worked with James "Buddy" McGirt. Neither fighter is a big puncher so it figured to go rounds, but Jeffries seemed unable to impose her will, despite referee Marty Sammon allowing many a foul without deducting a point. It's surprising the California State Athletic commission approved Saturdays bout between 4-1-1 Ana Julaton of Daly City against 7 time World Champion Kelsey Jeffries of Gilroy. The female boxers are scheduled for 10 rounds with the IBA Super Bantamweight title at stake. With over 50 pro bouts, Jeffries (who bolted from Friday's weigh-in after getting off the scale) has vastly more experience and has fought the far superior fighter over the years. Ana hopes that Kelsey has been in too many wars and may be a shell of her former self. On the scale, Jeffries looked almost too trim and came in 3 pounds under the 122 limit. Julaton, trained by the father of World Champion Nonito Donaire looked superb as the video shows. Ana remained to sigh autographs, give interviews and pose for pictures, while Kelsey did not. This title bout is not the first female main event in Central California featuring a female World Champion. In March of 1996, I promoted a bout between Gina Guidi and Mary Ann Almager who were both World Champions at the RIOT AT THE HYATT in Monterey, so it's actually been more than 13 years since a pair of women boxers fought as the Main Event. The rest of Saturday's card at the HP Pavilion features a handful of 4 rounders, many of whom are making their pro debuts, so promoter Roy Englebrecht, whose concept of presenting all 4 round bouts was abandoned after his first promotion in San Jose, is banking on the girls to pull in the fans.

Still no apology from the talking heads on HBO, but Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero left a lasting impression on the TV network that questioned his heart earlier this year. Saturday night in Houston, Guerrero captured the IBF Jr. Lightweight World Title in unanimous fashion with style, earning the championship from South African Malcolm Klassen.
This time, the Gilroy southpaw left no doubt. Last time on HBO, a headbutt aborted his bout in San Jose in the 2nd round. Max Kellerman questioned Robert Guerrero's heart. He virtually called "The Ghost" a quiter. Tonight, Kellerman's praise of Guerrero was earned, but Max never admitted his damning statements from that telecast. It may have been extra incentive that Robert didn't need, but no doubt, he wanted to stick it to the HBO talking heads. He did it with relentless pressure. 1200 blows were thrown by Guerrero in the 12 round rout. He landed his right jab all night. Robert moved with purpose to his right all night and naturally got cut with a headbutt midway through the fight. He also broke his hand in round 4. Blood flowed beside his left eye for the remainder of the bout. Guerrero won the rounds early and late. He won over the broadcasters with his gameplan and fought through adversity. We'll find out if Kellerman had anything to say to "The Ghost" after this bout. If he regrets his scathing comments when Robert last fought on the Network at HP Pavilion. Guerrero trained for this fight at Big Bear, sparring primarily with "Sugar" Shane Mosley. Both multiple world champions fought for us in Santa Cruz and Monterey.

A visit to my 40th High School reunion from Grant High in Van Nuys allowed a chance to visit the offices of Goossen-Tutor Productions in Sherman Oaks. Notre Dame was the Goossen family's High School of choice, where Greg Goossen stared in three sports while the other Goossen brothers followed their collective paths to Professional Boxing prominance. Once out of college I visited Dan's office with my audition tape, but he did not hire me for any ring announcing duties. Following a 25 year career of sports broadcasting, 12 Sports Productions was born. GT did shows in LA while I stayed in Monterey in Santa Cruz. We had no contact until GT began promoting at HP Pavilion. They've since left San Jose for a more favorable arrangement in Oakland and is riding the wave Andre Ward, and the Oracle Arena is dialed for Nov. 7th when Andre fights in THE Super Middleweight tournament. Let's see if they make the same mistake again, when I pitch the need to have a Northern California media guy to orchestrate press conferences, weighins, and of course undercard ring announcing.

Rick Noble has coached Carina Moreno since her amateur days. He was with her throughout her USA boxing conquests and bitter disappointment that Women's Boxing did not become an Olympic Sport in 2004. Gold was that attainable goal, something she's acheived as a pro. World titles at 105 and 108 pounds have been executed by Carina, but all aspects that prepare Moreno for the achievement rests with trainer Rick Noble. A former Forestry fire fighter, Noble now devotes his days to Carina.

Watsonville's World Boxing Champion Carina Moreno was honored in photography at the museum next to Lulu's in Downtown Santa Cruz. She spoke to her fans, answering questions and being the person she is...a completely dedicated and honest worker of her craft. She became World Champion in the 105 and 108 pound division after her introduction to pro boxing in Monterey and has beaten everyone, aside from one very controversial local show loss in Louisiana. Wendy Rodriquez will not give Carina a rematch despite constant efforts over the years. Upon outgrowing her RIOT AT THE HYATT roots, Carina signed with the Tachi Indian Casino in Lemoore, and contracted with Goossen-Tutor Promotions to produce shows. That relationship recently ended, and she is now promoted by a Southern California Thomson boxing, who has promised 2 scheduled dates this year. At 21-1 can claim women boxing's "pound for pound" champion, but legit opponents are hard to come by, and the jury is still out if any active promoter truely wants to promote female boxing. Hard to believe, because for over a decade promoting a women's match was a must for SHAKEDOWN IN QUAKETOWN and Monterey shows. 12 Sports Productions' will always include at least one women's matcht on a 6 bout card.
